St. Kitts & Nevis are home to a variety of animals and birds.
MONKEYS
The two islands are well known for a large population of African Green (Vervet) Monkeys which were first brought to St. Kitts in the 17th century. These are two we saw on Nevis at the Four Season’s golf course and our pool deck railing at Mandevilla.
BIRDS
176 species of birds have been spotted in St. Kitts & Nevis. We haven’t seen nearly that many yet but one we see quite often, especially at the Golden Rock Inn, is the Lesser Antillian Bull Finch. The national bird is the brown pelican.
SEA TURTLES
There are four types of sea turtles that can be seen on and around Nevis including, Leatherback, Hawksbill, Loggerhead, and Green Sea Turtles. Lover’s Beach is where the largest number of turtles do their nesting. All four types are considered endangered.
SHEEP AND GOATS
While not technically “wildlife” you will see sheep and goats wandering all over the island during the day. In the late afternoon they will all suddenly head for home and settle in for the night, only to be let out to freely roam the next day. Sheep on Nevis do not have wool so it’s easy to mix them up with the goats. The way to tell them apart is by their tails – goat tails point up and sheep tails point down.
DONKEYS
Be sure to keep the gate closed – wild donkeys are everywhere and they love to come eat the plants in the yard. This little guy at the gate and his mama came for a visit one morning when we left the gate open after our walk to the beach.
